Day 11,  Fri. May 2, Albuquerque, NM to St. Joseph, MO with a stop at Liberal, KS for fuel.

There was IFR weather along our route in the Texas panhandle and rain in Kansas but it was forecast to be clear when we land in Liberal.  To be safe I filed IFR.  We flew above the clouds but were in VFR conditions the entire time.

sangra de cristo mountains

Looking towards Santa Fe and the Sangre de Cristo mountains.  I used to love hiking in these mountains when I was a summer student at Los Alamos.

We stopped in Liberal, Kansas for fuel and lunch.  It was a very friendly place.  We used the courtesy car to go to lunch at Arby's.  Then headed off to St. Joseph.  We filed IFR and descended through a broken layer at St. Joseph.  At St. Joseph we checked the weather and determined we could wait until Sat. morning to fly on to Madison.  The friendly FBO arranged for a hotel for us with a good rate.
